Traditionally, the goal of computer graphics has been photo-realism; to generate synthetic images that are indistinguishable from photographs. Today, this goal has arguably been achieved. Given enough time computers can generate imagery that is indistinguishable from photographic images to the naked eye, and models exist that simulate optical processes down to the level of individual photons. Generating computer images that are indistinguishable from photographs is essential for a host of applications including design, marketing, and the entertainment industry. In many applications, but, an artistic image has advantages over a photorealistic image. Artistic images omit extraneous detail, focus attention on relevant features, clarify, simplify, and disambiguate shape, and show hidden parts. This has lead an increasing number of scientists to question realism as the only goal for computer graphics, and question: What are the images we make used for?

If the purpose of an image is simulation of physical interaction between light and matter (for research, realistic conceptualization, or entertainment), then photo-realism is a logically sound choice. If, on the other hand, the purpose is more general or abstract (to convey an thought, to give directions, to clarify a situation, to give an example) then photo-realism may confuse the issue at hand through unnecessary specificity, visual clutter (masking), and physical limitations. For example, the spatial layout map of a subway system does not include every bend and corner (specificity) because only the stations and their relative positions are of interest to the viewer. The map does not include all the buildings and streets where the subway runs (visual clutter) because this would make it hard to see the subway paths. Lastly, the map could not have been captured in a single photograph (physical limitation) because most parts of the subway system are underground and mutually hidden.

The Three types of Artistic Computer Graphics

We use the classification system of the Gooch and Gooch textbook that identifies three areas of Artistic computer graphics: (1)~Natural media simulation; (2)~Computer Tools for Artists; and (3)~Artistic style simulation.

Natural media simulation: Artistic rendering gives the graphics community freedom to choose media in addition to a camera for making images. Natural media simulation concerns itself with simulating (realistically) the substance that is applied to an image (e.g. oil, acrylic, coal), the instruments with which the substance is applied (e.g. brush, pencil, crayon), and the substrate to which the substance is applied (e.g. canvas, paper). In all cases, the simulated media is intended to produce surface marks that are indistinguishable from the real media.

A common assumption in the graphics community is that artistic rendering only involves simulating natural artistic media. This assumption is not surprising, because the first research in the field focused on reproducing traditional art forms, such as pen and ink, watercolor, and oil on canvas. Technology development in any field first seeks to imitate the previous mode of working. Thus, Artistic rendering seems to be following the usual development scheme. Artistic rendering currently embraces a wider scope of research. For example, a recent trend in artistic rendering research is interactive techniques. Current work focuses on the detection and rendering of feature lines to communicate shape. Silhouettes, surface and texture boundary lines, as well as creases are vital for communicating the shape of an object.

Computer Tools for Artists: Simulated media itself is of small practical use if it is not controlled by some entity. One of the most vital skills for an artist to learn is choosing the right medium for a given subject. Artists make these choices guided by considerations such as aesthetic appeal and the effectiveness of the medium in communicating the required visual message. Assisting users in making images is therefore a worthwhile endeavor. Commercial products, such as Photoshop or CorelDraw provide a rich set of tools and functionality by re-purposing standard input devices (mouse, keyboard, digital tablet). Other software and research work help users with technically challenging, tedious, or repetitive tasks, but ultimately the user still has to make the image and therefore make all decisions about layout, design, placement, etc.

Artistic Styles: The last category of NPR research takes inspiration from existing artistic styles and attempts to automatically transform some data (usually geometric models or photographs) into images in a given artistic style. Examples of this work include the creation of line drawings from three-dimensional models, light-models for cartoon-like shading, and painterly systems from geometric models, videos or photographs.

It should be noted that none of these systems presumes to make Art, they merely generate images that (as realistically as possible) resemble a particular artistic style. In small, much of Artistic computer graphics research is still devoted to realistic picture (as opposed to photo) creation.

i always see people drawing on photo shop with a tablet apparently its called, i like to draw and id really like to take it further, especially by trying out what they do on photoshop, can anyone help me out with where to get them and how expensive they usually are?

I got a Graphire tablet from the Wacom website about three years ago. It cost $ 200 and it came bundled with Photoshop. They sell cheaper ones though. You can get a Bamboo for about $ 80.

A tutorial and speedpainting video about my comic colouring technique. You need a reasonably excellent knowledge of Photoshop to follow what I’m doing. Otherwise it’s just a fun watch. There *is* an audio crapout half-way through the video – it’s not your computer. But I’ve already produced this video about ten times and I’m *not* doing it again! LOL! The missing quote by Bob Ross is “There are no mistakes, just pleased accidents.” I was talking about putting the incorrect colour down. OH! And the audio is about ten seconds out of sync. What I’m describing happens before I say it. I don’t know if that’s me or YouTube. Who knows! I’ll try to make sure it doesn’t happen next time! Music from the computer game Interstate ’76. ETA: People keep asking what brush preset I use in this tutorial. I basically use a 19 pixel round brush. But I have a Wacom Tablet, which means that I have the option to go into the brush presets in the brush palette and switch the opacity controls to pressure and the flow controls to pressure. (These options can be found under the “Brushes” tab in the top right hand corner of the Photoshop screen. Then go to “Other Dynamics” in the menu that pops down when you hit that tab.) If you don’t have a Wacom Tablet (or any sort of drawing tablet) then you won’t get the sensitivity I have in this tutorial. The closest thing I can recommend for mouse users is to bring the flow controls of your brush right down to about 5-10 percent, and use the brush like watercolours …

EDIT: Vital Announcement 12/5/09 Had a very rough day yesterday and my computer got another one of those spyware infections. :c And it froze me computer, so I had to shut it down. When I turned it back on, a blue screen popped up with an error message that prevents me from turning on my computer. And it happened on Safe Mode and any other mode of configuration. And so now, all my files, animations, documents, videos, programs, and everything cannot be accessed. So until I can miraculosly get it fixed somehow, I probably will not be uploading anything for the week..or even perhaps I am never going to upload anything until I get another computer :c And if it cannot be fixed, then I have lost all my files and stuff that I have been working on… Oh, and just if you are wondering, I am using an HP laptop right now. I can’t do any animations or stuff with it because of its low memory capacity, so I can’t download photoshop either :c Yes, I finally got a tablet (not the kind I would have prefered, but there is no such thing as a terrible tablet) and here is a video showing you guys a small practice of drawing with it. I was commissioned by senhao93 to draw her Aran character from Maple Tale. This is a few images of her character: s535.photobucket.com Just like with the video of Dawn, I drew the character in pencil on 11″ x 14″ Bristol paper (close to or equivalent to card stock). I was drawing her during Drawing II while the class was doing two-point perspectives of the interior space of the Student Center here. In between layers of ink wash, I would open my pad and keep sketching. I’ve had people accuse me of tracing more than a few times now. The tablet still feels a bit too awkward for me to draw completely on it (I originally tried doing this drawing entirely on the computer), so I’m still doing the sketch-in-reality and redraw on the computer thing. But, The fact that Bristol is a pretty high-weight paper alone should negate that accusation. Aside from that… well, I don’t know. I don’t have a camera yet to record me drawing traditionally, but if I must place one up, then I guess I will. Once you have a laptop or desktop you can invest in many additional components to make your live a lot simpler. These are known as computer peripherals, as technology moves on they are becoming larger and better in making day to day tasks simpler for you. If you have a desktop computer then there are some essential peripherals that you need in order to be able to use it. Firstly you need a mouse and keyboard in order to perform any tasks such as typing or changing the configuration of your pc.

That is one of the benefits of buying a laptop, although many people buy externals mice to make it simpler to navigate around the system, they are not essential so if your are on a budget, you can simply buy the base unit and that will be sufficient for you to do anything you want.

One of the most well loved peripherals people go for is a printer, this will allow you to print any work you have so you have a hard copy of any document you require. It also enables you to write letters on the computer, save them and make any adjustments before you come to the final version. Once you are pleased with it you can print it off and send it in, this makes job applications and CV’s seem more professional.

Another useful peripheral for designers or artists is a graphics tablet, this will allow you to draw on a tablet which will interpret it onto the computer screen. Its gives you the ability to draw with more precision if you don’t have the necessary skills on photo software such as Adobe Photoshop.

If you are into photo editing there is another peripheral that will be able to help you in getting the perfect picture, you can use a scanner to copy hard copies and edit them on your pc. This is excellent if you have images in a magazine, booklet or leaflet that you would want to incorporate into a website or make changes to.

You will need speakers if you want to have sound on your desktop computer, laptop have speakers in built which will save you buying them. You could always buy some headphones if you don’t want everyone to be able to hear your music, game sounds or videos. Headphones will give you many benefits, especially if you play games.

Notice, August 09, 2009: Hey guys, I really just used this video as a notice as well. Look I’m still animating, and as proof… I’ve been writing a new tale currently that’s similar to Nin: Ace Attorney. Fantasy removed but the characters are from my series. Also, I’m deciding whether to work on… 1.) Spirit & Shadow (Shou, Ynuo, Nin, & Ocuo’s Past) 2.) Remnants (Current Time of Events) 3.) Court & Law (The New Tale I’m Writing) 4.) Rogue Shadow (Alternate World) Also, the tests proved a bunch of failed thoughts but it got me some side thoughts to work with okay everyone? Uploading the test videos is pointless now pretty much so it’s skipped. Comment about the video and/or on this please~ First game-play video with me using a tablet on this game! Tablet are pro. I also got my comp to perform well enough to record background videos in the game. (I got a tablet mainly to practice computer drawing but Osu! just happened to be playable with a tablet too so yea!) Comment on the song I chose: You read the subtitles! WHY NOT LIKE IT!? “Innocent Key” makes random perverted songs here and there lol.
